Lodge Grass, Montana is a small town in Big Horn County, on the Crow Indian Reservation. Lodge Grass is named for Lodge Grass Creek, which flows through the town. However, the creek was named for an erroneous translation of the Crow, which would be more accurately translated Greasy Grass Creek. Nevertheless, the name stuck and the town was named for the creek. The town was formed in 1908 as a freight station and water stop along the railroad between Sheridan, Wyoming and Billings, Montana, although it wasn’t incorporated until 1927. The town site is small, covering less than a quarter square-mile of land. Lodge Grass is located just west of I-90 on Montana Highway 463, south of Garryown and Crow Agency, north of Wyola and Aberdeen, and near Montana’s border with Wyoming.
