The town of Manhattan, Montana is in Gallatin County. Founded in 1865 as a rural community center, Manhattan was first known as Hamilton, and a post office was established there in 1868. In 1883, the Northern Pacific Railroad extended its track to the area, about one mile north of Hamilton, and the settlement that followed the railroad was named Moreland. John Potters General Store was moved from Hamilton to Moreland in the winter of 1883-1884, other businesses followed, and Moreland was renamed Manhattan in 1890. When Manhattan was incorporated in 1911, its boundaries included the former town of Hamilton. Manhattan is located along I-90, southeast of Logan, Carpenter and Three Forks, and northwest of Belgrade. Buell and Amsterdam are south of Manhattan, along Route 288.
