Medicine Lake is located in Sheridan County, in northeastern Montana, about thirty miles from the Missouri River. Sitting Bull and his last band of Lakota people walked through Medicine Lake on their way to surrender at Fort Buford, North Dakota. Homesteaders began settling the area in the early 1900s, establishing farms and ranches in the area, founding the town of Medicine Lake. The town is located along Montana Highway 16, north of Homestead and Froid and Culbertson, southwest of Dagmar, and south of Antelope and Plentywood. The Fort Peck Indian Reservation is west of Medicine Lake, and the North Dakota border is to the east.
