The town of Plains, Montana is in Sanders County. Originally, the community was known variously as Horse Plains or Wild Horse Plains, as the local Indians would winter their horses there, where they fed on the grasses in the Clark Fork River Valley. A post office was established there in 1883, and the name of the town was shortened to Plains in 1905. The town is situated on both sides of the Clark Fork River, with the fair grounds on one side of the river, while the bulk of the town, including its downtown district, is on the other. Plains is located at the intersection of Routes 28 and 200, northwest of Paradise, southeast of Weeksville, and northeast of Donlan.
