Named for the Wisconsin town of that name, Superior is the county seat of Mineral County, in eastern Montana. Superior was founded in 1869, although a post office was not established until 1871, when gold was discovered in Mineral County. Several thousand miners came into the area around Cedar Creek and, even after the gold rush was over, mining continued to contribute to the area’s economy, along with logging. In 1908, the first Bibles placed by the Gideons were received by the Superior Hotel. The town of Superior is surrounded by mountains, as it is situated in the middle of the Bitterroot Range. The Clark Fork River flows through the town’s downtown region. Along I-90, Superior is southeast of St. Regis and Foraker and northwest of Riverbend and Tarkio.
