The city of Townsend is the county seat of Broadwater County, Montana. The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through the area in 1805, but permanent settlers did not arrive until the late 1860s, largely homesteaders and Civil War veterans seeking gold. A railroad stop was established there in 1883, as businesses opened there in support of the gold mining operations. The community was named by the railroad, in honor of the wife of Charles Barstow Wright, president of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Townsend is located near the southern tip of Canyon Ferry Lake, Montana’s third largest body of water. It is situated along Highway 287, north of Toston and Three Forks, and southeast of Helena and East Helena. The actor, Patrick Duffy, was born in Townsend.
