All of Virginia City and much of the surrounding region are listed as a National Historic Landmark District, as the area is a well preserved placer mining town, one that once had a population of more than ten thousand. Owned by the State of Montana, the 30-inch narrow gauge tourist railroad is built on dredge tailings along Alder Gulch, connecting Virginia City and Nevada City with a one and a half mile mainline. The Elling House Arts & Humanities Center
The historic home has been used for artistic and musical presentations since 1876, when it was the Elling family home. The current center was formed in 2008 in order to continue this tradition.
