Benkelman is the seat of Dundy County, located in the southwestern corner of Nebraska, bordering Kansas and Colorado. When Benkelman was first settled, it had a post office named Elmer, for Elmer Miller, the owner of a nearby ranch. Later, the post office was renamed Collinville, for Moses Collins, and a station of the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad line was established there in 1882. In 1884, it was named the county seat. The railroad promised to rename its station for the Benkelman brothers, owners of the largest cattle operation in the area, if they shipped their cattle by rail to the Omaha market rather than herding them to other locations and, in 1885, it was renamed Benkelman. The city of Benkelman is located southwest of Max, east of Parks, and north of Bird City.
