Situated near the intersection of Interstate 76 and Interstate 80, the village of Big Springs is in Deuel County, Nebraska. The small community was platted by the railroad in 1884, as a stopping point for the men who laid the ties for its rail lines, and named for a stream that runs through town, although its name was Bigspring until 1943. Initially, the community consisted only of the Phelps Hotel and a few other buildings that provided necessities for the rail line workers. The Oregon Trail passed through Deuel County near Big Springs, and the California Crossing was just a few miles east of the village. The village is ten miles east of the Nebraska-Colorado border, northeast of Julesburg.
