The city of Blair is in Washington County, Nebraska. Although Blair is the county seat and the largest city in the county, it was not one of its earliest towns. Blair was established when the Sioux City & Pacific Railroad chose to cross the Missouri River at that location, going from Missouri Valley, Iowa to what was known as Carter Hollow on the Nebraska side, bypassing the existing towns of DeSoto and Cuming City, and creating a new town. The land for the new town was purchased by John I. Blair, a railroad official, who had the city platted and named for himself in 1869. Several businesses and churches were physically moved from former town sites to Blair, and new buildings were constructed. Before 1869 closed, Blair was chosen as the county seat. Blair is north-northwest of Omaha, northeast of Fremont, and west of Missouri Valley, Iowa.
