The city of Bridgeport is the county seat of Morrill County, Nebraska. Named for a bridge that was constructed over the North Platte River by Henry T. Clarke in 1876, the town was established three miles downstream from the bridge in 1899, when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad was completed through the territory, increasing settlement in the area. Soon afterwards, the Bell Telephone Company installed a line connecting Bridgeport with Alliance to the north, and the towns west to Scottsbluff. Bridgeport was incorporated as a village in 1901 and, when Morrill County was formed out of the former Cheyenne County in 1909, Bridgeport was named the county seat.
