The city of Gordon is in Sheridan County, Nebraska. Prior to 1884, there were few settlers in the area. However, the community was incorporated as a village in 1885, when the railroad was extended to that point, and named for John Gordon, an early settler. In May of 1920, Gordon was incorporated as a city, with a population of 1,200. Dwight Griswold, the 25th governor of Nebraska, spent his childhood in Gordon. Gordon is fifteen miles from South Dakota and one hundred and twenty miles from Wyoming. Gordon is northeast of Rushville, southwest of Merriman, and just south of the South Dakota border.
