Named for the city in Sweden, Gothenburg, Nebraska is the only other city with that name in the world. Situated in Dawson County, the city of Gothenburg was founded by Olof Bergstrom, a Swedish immigrant, in 1882. Prior to coming to Gothenburg, Bergstrom had worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, and become a land agent for the railroad. The original portion of the town was laid out parallel to the tracks. Bergstrom made several trips to Sweden to lead groups of settlers to the area, lending to the Swedish heritage of the city. As one of the Pony Express stations was located in Gothenburg, the Pony Express Historical Society was founded there in 1980, currently operating the Gothenburg Historical Museum. Gothenburg is located along I-80, northwest of Cozad and Lexington, and southeast of Brady and Maxwell.
