Established in 1885, at the time that the railroad was extended to the area, the village of Hay Springs was named for its production of hay in the valley east of the springs. Hay Springs is in Sheridan County, Nebraska. Initially, as the town was being established, it consisted of a collection of tents and shanties, whose businesses sported hand-made signs announcing the nature of their business. Its first post office was moved to Hay Springs from Moakler, three miles west of Hay Springs, in 1885. The village is known, locally, for the Monster of Walgren Lake, which was first reported as being seen in 1923. Hay Springs is west of Rushville and Clinton, southeast of Chadron, and south of Pine Ridge.
