Named for Hemmingford, Quebec, the hometown of its founder, the village of Hemingford is located in Box Butte County, in western Nebraska. Hemingford was incorporated in 1886, the year that the surveying crew for the Burlington Railroad arrived in the area. The railroad extended its tracks to Hemingford in 1889, after which the county seat was moved from Nonpareil to Hemingford, only to lose it to Alliance nine years later. The village remains primarily an agricultural town, although the railroad was significant to its economy through much of its existence, although its depot service ended in 1983, after a train derailment destroyed the building. Box Butte Reservoir is situated nine miles north of the village, providing camping, fishing and recreational opportunities. Hemingford is southeast of Crawford, south of Chadron, and northwest of Alliance.
