The city of Imperial is the county seat of Chase County, Nebraska. The town of Imperial was originally built on land homesteaded by Thomas Mercier and Melville J. Goodrich, who offered a town lot to anyone who would put up a building and start the town. Mercier served as the town’s first postmaster in 1885. In 1888, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad reached an area nearby. When the railroad grade was completed, the Lincoln Land Company offered lots to those who agreed to move their buildings from the town’s original location to the railroad addition, and nearly all of the town’s buildings were moved to the railroad line, establishing the current business district of Imperial. The city is northwest of Enders, northeast of Champion, and east of Lamar.
