The city of Minden is the county seat of Kearney County, Nebraska. In 1876, when county voters elected to remove the county seat from Lowell to Minden, the latter offered only a more central location, as there was not yet a single resident or building in Minden, as the early settlement of Kearney County was concentrated in the northern regions, where the Oregon Trail met the Platte River, near Fort Kearney. At the time that Minden was selected as the shire town, Lowell had both a brick courthouse and a railroad. Once the matter of the county seat was settled, Minden’s population grew rapidly, and the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad came through in 1883, the Kansas City & Omaha Railroad in 1887. At this time, Minden’s economic base is primarily agricultural, but diversified with several manufacturing businesses. Minden is northeast of Axtell and southwest of Heartwell, with Norman to the east.
