The seat of Lincoln County, Nebraska, the city of North Platte is in the southwestern part of the state, at the point where the North and South Platte Rivers come together to form the Platte River. The city was established when the Union Pacific Railroad extended its track to the area in 1868, and it remains a railroad town, with the Union Pacific’s Bailey Yard situated within the city. For the first decade of its existence, North Platte was also the end of the Texas cattle trail. It was incorporated as a village in 1873, became a second class city in 1875, and a first class city in 1910. North Platte is south of Stapleton, north of Wellfleet, east of Hershey and Sutherland, and west of Brady.
