Ord, Nebraska is the county seat of Valley County. Situated along the North Loup River, in the north-central part of the state, the town was laid out in 1874 on land purchased from the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad Company, and named for General Edward O.C. Ord, who was in command of the military along the Platte, who chose the site for Fort Hartsuff, which protected the area from Indian attack from 1874 to 1881, and is now restored as a state park. Ord was named the county seat by its first one hundred settlers, and a post office, school house, and courthouse were built during the first year of the town. By 1888, there were two railroads serving the town, the Burlington and the Union Pacific. Ord is located between the Calamus and Sherman lakes, southeast of Elyria and northwest of Scotia.
