Named for the creek that flows through the center of town, the city of Papillion is the county seat of Sarpy County, Nebraska. The original townsite was several miles northeast of its current location. Platted in 1856, and incorporated in 1857, the original Papillion had a post office, but soon disappeared from the records. The current city by that name was platted in 1870, after the Union Pacific Railroad established a station at Saling’s Grove, just east of Papillion, and constructed a side track and station house to Papillion. In 1872, Samuel Pike platted an adjoining area, called South Papillion, which has since become part of Papillion. The city was incorporated in 1883, and named the county seat in 1875. Papillion borders La Vista to the north, Chalco to the west, and Gilmore to the east.
