The village of Spencer, Nebraska is in Boyd County. The community was founded in the early 1890s, after Boyd County was organized. U.S. Adams and Sanford Parker toured the newly formed county, finding a plateau near the center of the county, above the Ponca Creek Valley, offering a view in all directions. There was already a small saloon there, operated by Bill Stearns. Adams returned later that year and surveyed a town site, naming it Spencer. Parker established a bank there, J.P. Mann built a store, and a newspaper was soon published there. Within a few months, Spencer was a frontier town. Due in large part to its location above the flood plain, Spencer has been spared many of the natural disasters that were faced by other Nebraska towns. Spencer is southeast of Butte, southwest of Gross, and northwest of Bristow and Lynch.
