The village of Stapleton, Nebraska is the county seat of Logan County. The village was founded in 1912, when the Union Pacific Railroad extended a branch line to the area. The extension was intended to cross McPherson and Arthur counties, linking the railroad with a main line along the North Platte River in Garden County, but it never was extended that far, and Stapleton remained a terminus station. The town site was part of three different homesteads, and incorporated in 1913. Stapleton is one of only two villages in the county, the other being Gandy, an older town that had been bypassed by the railroad, which had served as the seat of county government from 1885 to 1930. At its peak, in 1930, Stapleton had a population of 431. Stapleton is bounded by Gandy on the east.
