The city of West Point, Nebraska is the seat of government for Cuming County. The community was founded by a group of businessmen from Omaha who formed the Nebraska Settlement Association in 1857. Choosing a location on a bend in the river, they first named their settlement New Philadelphia. That name didn’t last long, however. Even before a post office was established at J.C. Crawford’s log cabin in May of 1858, it was known as West Point, since it was the farthest point west along the Elkhorn Valley. Before the end of 1858, West Point was named the county seat. The town grew slowly, in part because of fear of attack by the Pawnee Indians. In 1870, the railroad reached West Point, spurring a population growth. West Point is located at the intersection of US Highway 275 and State Highway 32, west of Oakland, southeast of Beemer, and north of Crowell.
