Although Battle Mountain is an unincorporated community, it serves as the county seat of Lander County, Nevada. Located on Interstate 80, between Winnemucca and Elko, Battle Mountain served as a stopping point for west-bound travelers on the Emigrant Trail along the Humboldt River in 1845. The tradition is that Battle Mountain got its name from confrontations between early settlers and Native American tribes during the 1850s and 1860s. Battle Mountain was established as a townsite in 1870 when the railroad moved the Argenta station there to serve the copper and gold mining industries. The Nevada Legislature overrode a governor’s veto in 1874 to approve the establishment of a railroad from Austin to Battle Mountain, connecting the silver mines in Austin with the Central Pacific line at Battle Mountain. President Ulysses Grant spoke in the town during his Western speaking tour of 1879.
