Formerly known as Culverwell and Calientes, the city of Caliente is in Lincoln County, Nevada. The city’s name originated from a nearby hot springs, as its name means hot in Spanish. The area was originally settled in the early 1860s by Ike and Dow Barton, both slaves who had escaped from Arkansas. In the early 1870s, the area became known as Dutch Flat, consisting mostly of the Jackson Ranch. In 1874, Charles and William Culverwell bought the ranch and named it Culverwell Ranch, which was later shortened to Culverwell. At the turn of the century, it became known as Calientes but when its post office was established in 1901, postal officials dropped the s from its name. At its height, the city had a population of over five thousand. The Wester novelist, Zane Grey, wrote much of his work in Caliente.
