Situated in Lyon County, Nevada, the city of Fernley was incorporated in 2001, having previously been a census-designated place or unincorporated town. The Amazon.com center and Reno-Fernley Raceway are located in Fernley. The settlement was established in 1904, and developed primarily as an agricultural and ranching community. Although there were people living in the area prior to 1904, Fernley received its name when the Southern Pacific Railroad realigned its route through northwestern Nevada, after which Fernley developed as a station stop, with a post office opening in 1908. The primary population center of Fernley is located at the intersection of Interstate 80, US Route 50 Alternate, and US 95-A. The city is southeast of Wadsworth.
