Surrounded by mountains, the City of Henderson, in Clark County, is the second largest city in Nevada, after Las Vegas, and is located adjacent to the larger city, as part of the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The town developed in the 1940s around the Basic Magnesium Plant, a significant metal used by the US War Department in munition casings, airplane engines, and other parts. Following World War II, Henderson's population decreased by two-thirds, but it has since recovered, in large part through attracting other industries. Henderson includes several planned communities, including Green Valley, Green Valley Ranch, Lake Las Vegas, MacDonald Highlands, and Seven Hills.
