The town of Pahrump is the largest settlement in Nye County, Nevada. Pahrump was originally inhabited by the Shoshone, and was slowly settled by European-Americans in the late 19th century. The area was known for its large artesian wells, around which several large ranch-style holdings were established, mostly a thousand acres or more in size. The settlement had no electricity or telephone service until the 1960s, and there were no paved roads. As Las Vegas grew, real estate speculation became more common in the area.
