Wells is located in Elko County, in northeastern Nevada. The city began as Humboldt Wells, a place along the California Trail, which later became a railroad town along the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, and once a stopover for passenger trains. The Humboldt River begins among springs and swamps just west of the city. After a fire in the late 19th century, the town was rebuilt, and subsequently referred to only as Wells. Metropolis is a small ghost town north of Wells, which is often associated with the Wells. The city of Wells is about fifty miles east of Elko.
