West Wendover is a small city in Elko County, Nevada. Situated on the easter border of Nevada and the western edge of the Great Salt Lake Desert, the city is contiguous with Wendover, Utah, for which it was named. Development in West Wendover began in the 1930s and 1940s with the introduction of legalized gambling in Nevada, and established itself as a resort destination in the 1970s and 1980s, when more casinos, hotels, and other facilities were built. West Wendover was incorporated as a city in 1991. The city is the only part of Nevada that is legally within the Mountain Time Zone, although other border communities observe Mountain Time on an unofficial basis. In 2006, residents in both Wendover and West Wendover voted to annex Wendover into the Nevada city, but Utah placed a halt to the process.
