The town of Alstead is in Cheshire County, New Hampshire. The town was chartered in 1735 as one in an line of nine forts that were established for the protection of southwestern New Hampshire from Indian attack. First named Newton, it was incorporated as Alstead in 1763, named for Johann Heinrich Alsted, who compiled an early encyclopedia. After the Revolutionary War, Alstead first joined Vermont but returned to New Hampshire at the insistence of George Washington. Alstead was the location of the New Hampshire’s first paper mill, and was sometimes known as Paper Mill Village. Feuer State Forest lies within the town of Alstead.
