Settled in 1761, the town of Andover, New Hampshire was initially named Emerisstown, although the area on which it was built was formerly known as New Breton or New Britton, as it has been granted to soldiers who had participated in the 1745 capture of Cape Breton from the French. The town was incorporated as Andover in 1779. The Proctor Academy, which became a large contributor to the town’s economy, was established there in 1848. The unincorporated communities of East Andover, West Andover, Cilleyville, and Potter Place are within the town of Andover. Ragged Mountain State Forest is within the town. Nahum Josiah Bachelder, the 49th governor of New Hampshire, was a native of Andover.
