Settled in 1728, and incorporated in 1767, and named for Colonel Theodore Atkinson, the town of Atkinson is in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Atkinson Academy, the second oldest coeducational school in the country, was founded there as a boys school in 1787 by the Reverend Stephen Peabody, General Nathaniel Peabody, and Doctor William Cogswell, and played a large role in the economy of the town. Today, Atkinson is a quiet bedroom community, and home to several descendants of former President John Quincy Adams.
