Part of the Mountain Lakes District, the town of Bath is in Grafton County, New Hampshire, and includes the village of Swiftwater. The area where the town was built was granted to the Reverend Andrew Gardner in 1761 by Governor Benning Wentworth, who named it for William Pulteney, First Earl of Bath. The area was initially settled in 1765 by John Herriman, but he failed to fulfill the terms of the original grant, so it was regranted in 1769 by Governor John Wentworth. The town is situated on the Connecticut River, and the northernmost point of Lake Hitchcock. The village of Swiftwater is along Route 112, near the town’s border with Haverhill.
