A suburb of Manchester, Bedford is an affluent town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. It was established as Narragansett No. 5 in 1733, set aside for soldiers who fought against the Narragansett Indians in Rhode Island. Before it was incorporated as Bedford in 1750, it was also known as Souhegan East. The town was first settled on what is now known as Hawthorne Drive, around 1737. Bedford is bounded by the town of Goffstown and the city of Manchester to the north, by Manchester to the east, Merrimack to the south, and the towns of Amherst and New Boston to the west.
