Located in an area of Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, once known as Society Land, the town of Bennington was established from parts of Deering, Francestown, Greenfield, and Hancock, and incorporated in 1842. Prior to its incorporation, portions of the townsite was known as Hancock Factory Village. Bennington was named for the Revolutionary War Battle of Bennington, which was fought near Bennington, Vermont in 1777. Great Falls, in the Contoocook River, provided water power for the town’s mills, which included a gristmill, cotton mill, tannery, and tool manufacturing plants. A paper company was started there in 1835, with other mills and industries to follow. The town has a Selectman form of government.
