Bristol is in Grafton County, New Hampshire. The primary settlement within the town is at the intersection of NH Routes 3A and 104. The area of the town is surrounded by hills and lakes, with two-thirds of Newfound Lake, a resort area, being within the town limits. Bristol separated from New Chester in 1819, and was named for the fine sand or clay deposits that were found in the area, and thought to be similar to that used in Bristol, England to make fine china and pottery. Nathaniel S. Berry, 28th Governor of New Hampshire, lived in Bristol during the latter part of his life, and Benjamin Flanders, Reconstruction Governor of Louisiana, and mayor of New Orleans, was born in Bristol.
