The town of Chesterfield, in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, includes the unincorporated communities of Spofford and West Chesterfield, as well as Spofford Lake, the Chesterfield Gorge Natural Area, and portions of Pisgah State Park and the Wantastiquet Mountain State Forest. Granted in 1735, Chesterfield was the site of Fort Number 1, the first in a line of forts along the Connecticut River, and was incorporated as a town in 1752, after the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border was fixed. The first Methodist religious services were conducted in Chesterfield in 1772, and Asbury Church is the oldest Methodist church in the state, conducting regular Sunday services for more than two centuries.
