The town of Chichester, in Merrimack County, New Hampshire, was granted to Nathaniel Gookin and others, by Governor John Wentworth, in 1727, and settled in 1758, Paul Morrill being the first settler. The town was named for Thomas Pelham Holles, Duke of Newcastle and Earl of Chichester, England, who was influential in interactions between England and the American colonies at the time. Chichester is located just east of Concord.
