Incorporated in 1772, Francestown is in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. The town was named for Frances Deering Wentworth, the wife of Colonial Governor John Wentworth. Francestown was on the only route between Boston and Vermont and, for several years, the town collected a toll of one cent per mile from coaches and wagons, along the Second New Hampshire Turnpike. Samuel Bell, the 14th governor of New Hampshire, practiced law in Francestown, and Levi Woodbury, an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, U.S. Senator, and the 15th governor of New Hampshire, was born in Francestown.
