Situated in the New Hampshire White Mountains, in Grafton County, the town of Franconia is home to the northern part of Franconia Notch State Park, which occupies the eastern and southern part of the town, as well as a portion of the Appalachian Trail, which crosses the southern part of town. Franconia was granted by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth in 1764, and given the name that had already been widely applied to the area. Amid accusations that the terms of the grant had not been met, it was regranted in 1772 by Governor John Wentworth, as Morristown. After a legal battle over the two grants, the first grant was recognized and its name reverted to Franconia. The poet, Robert Frost, once owned a farm in Franconia, from which he launched his writing career.
