Freedom, in Carroll County, New Hampshire, is situated between the Lakes Region and the White Mountains, with its eastern boundary running along the Maine state border. Ossipee Lake, with its resorts and camps, is in the southwestern portion of the town. Freedom was part of Effingham, known as North Effingham. When several settlers from Maine moved into the area, a conflict of culture and religion developed between the people in North Effingham and those along the seacoast, in Effingham. As a result, North Effingham separated to form the town of Freedom, which was incorporated in 1831. Frank S. Black, the 32nd governor of New York, was a summer resident of Freedom.
