The town of Gorham is in Coos County, within the New Hampshire White Mountains. Parts of the White Mountain National Forest are in the south and northwest, while Moose Brook State Park is in the west. The town is crossed by the Appalachian Trail. Chartered in 1770 and settled around 1802, Gorham was initially part of Shelburne, and known as the Shelburne Addition. The town was incorporated in 1836, and named for Gorham, Maine. Although the town is now dependent primarily on tourism, its early economy was related to to lumber, along with mills operated by water power from the Androscoggin River.
