The town of Henniker, New Hampshire is in Merrimack County. Its main village is situated along the Contoocook River, near where NH Route 14 intersects with Old Concord Road, but the village of West Henniker is also part of the town. Settled in 1761 by James Peter, Henniker was first known as Number Six in a line of settlements between the Merrimack and Connecticut rivers. Granted to Andrew Todd by the Masonian Proprietors in 1752, the community was known as Todd’s Town for a time, then New Marlborough, before being named Henniker when it was incorporated in 1768, named for Sir John Henniker, a London merchant with shipping interests in Boston and Portsmouth. Henniker is home to New England College, Ames State Forest, Craney Hill State Forest, and Pats Peak Ski Area. Ted Williams, left fielder with the Boston Red Sox, was a resident of Henniker.
