The town of Hollis is in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. The origin of the town’s name is in dispute. It may have been named for Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle, to whom Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth was indebted, for his appointment to governor, or it may have been named for Thomas Hollis, a benefactor of Harvard College. Hollis was chartered by Governor Wentworth in 1746, and its first settlers were Captain Peter Powers, his wife, Anna Keyes, and their children, Peter and Stephen. The Nashua River flows through the southeast corner of the town, while the Nissitissit River flows through the western part of the town.
