The town of Marlborough is in Cheshire County, New Hampshire. The town was first granted by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth in 1752 as Monadnock No. 5, one of several for towns that were originally known only by a number. Lots were drawn in 1762, and the area was settled two years later. The town was renamed Oxford, and then New Marlborough, but was incorporated as Marlborough in 1776, named for the Massachusetts town that many of its earlier settlers were from. Marlborough, New Hampshire was once known for its granite quarries and industries. Marlborough is southeast of Keene, southwest of Harrisville, and northeast of Swanzey.
