The town of Milton, in the northeastern section of Strafford County, New Hampshire, includes the villages of Milton and Milton Mills. Situated about six miles north of the village of Milton, Milton Mills was once known as Shapleigh Mills. Settled in 1760, Milton was originally a part of Rochester known as the Northeast Parish, Three Ponds, or Milton Mills. Its early economy was dependent upon water power from the Salmon Falls River, which powered several mills and factories. The North Conway branch of the Boston & Maine Railroad runs through Milton. The town is located along New Hampshire’s border with Maine, and about forty miles from Concord, the state capitol.
