The town of Mont Vernon is in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. Although named for Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, it isn’t clearly known why it uses a different spelling. Until 1803, Mont Vernon was a part of Amherst; after breaking away, it later added a portion of neighboring Lyndeborough. Originally dependent on agriculture, by the late 1890s, Mont Vernon had become a tourist destination, drawing summer visitors from Boston and elsewhere, but it tourist business dwindled after the development of the automobile, allowing people to travel further from home. Mont Vernon is north of Milford, northwest of Amherst, northeast of Wilton, east of Lyndeborough, and south of New Boston.
