New Hampton, in Belknap County, New Hampshire, is a winter sports resort area that includes George Duncan State Forest. The geographic center of New Hampshire is in the eastern part of New Hampton.The land was granted by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth in 1765, and named the Moultonborough Addition, for Colonel Jonathan Moulton, the town moderator. Later, its name was changed to New Hampton, for Hampton, New Hampshire, Moulton’s hometown. Adoniram Judson Gordon, the founder and namesake of Gordon College, was born in New Hampton, and Ernest Thompson, author of On Golden Pond, was a summer resident. New Hampton is northeast of Bristol, south of Ashland, and southwest of Meredith.
