The town of South Hampton, in Rockingham County, is home to Cowden State Forest and Powwow State Forest, in southeastern New Hampshire, at its border with Massachusetts. The town was one of the first towns granted by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth after the boundaries of New Hampshire and Massachusetts were set in 1741, and the town was chartered in 1742, comprised of parts of what had previously been Amesbury and Salisbury, Massachusetts. South Hampton is northwest of Amesbury, Massachusetts, west of Seabrook, and southeast of Kingston, New Hampshire. South Hampton students attend the Barnard School in South Hampton up to the eighth grade, then tuition to Amesbury, Massachusetts for high school.
